LG 55LS4500 is a Carbon Copy of the 4600 Series Only Without 3D
We have reviewed the 4600 series with 3D capability and this LG 55LS4500 comes pretty darn close to that, with one exception being the exclusion of 3D, which, oddly enough, seemed to be the strongest selling point for the 4600. In any case, the LG 55LS4500 55” 1080p 120Hz Edge LED HDTV is still worth a penny for your thought. The LG 55LS4500 best buy is in the region of $800, which makes it around $100 more expensive than its 4600 cousin and that kind of sucks, especially, as we mentioned earlier, you do not have 3D in the LG 55LS4500 model. Apart from the already cited features found in the 4600, namely the Clear Voice II, Picture Wizard II, Triple XD Engine and Intelligent Sensor, you also get Simplink – which is certainly not ingenious but simply allows the LG 55LS4500 to recognize when some external device is plugged into it and switches inputs automatically to function with them. Just in case you get stuck and feel brave enough to use this feature there’s a fairly simple explanation right here. What’s more (or less, we should say), when comparing the LG 55LS4500 with the 4600, is that you only get 2 HDMI ports, 1 USB port, 1 Composite input and 1 Component input. Of course there is still no Smart TV capability and no direct Wi-Fi connection. A little bare for what you pay, in our opinion! As most of the connections are at the rear end of the LG 55LS4500, we are glad, at least, that LG thought of adding swivel technology.
Oh I Forgot About Edge-Lit and Picture Modes
There are so many features we expected to see but didn’t in the LG 55LS4500 that we are finding all kinds of excuses to try and find some minor ones (which are usually found in any decent LED TV). There’s the Edge-Lit technology, which aims to dim your picture in bright rooms, through its panels and the possibility of adapting your widescreen mode to a selection of Cinema Zoom 16:9, Just Scan, Set by Program, Zoom or Conventional 4:3.
You also get, with the LG 55LS4500, the very average 2x10W built-in speakers. As you can see, we are struggling to find any more additional extras to throw at you to convince you to spend $100 more than the 4600, even if you do not use 3D!
LG 55LS4500 Amazon Reviews and More
In our frustration at not having enough excuses to offer you to convince you otherwise, we turned our direction towards Amazon buyers, a faithful bunch of servants, who do not take kindly to being burnt. We already mentioned, in our review of the 4600, the inexcusable 120Hz being advertised in the guise of a 60Hz, which is evident also within the LG 55LS4500. The energy saver option can be a pain as it is set by default and would need to be disabled to avoid dark pictures when the lights are switched off.
The USB port does not allow movies to be played with Flash – only music and photos are allowed.
Taking all into consideration we cannot recommend you buying the LG 55LS4500 when compared to its 4600 counterpart for the simple reason that it’s a rip-off, especially as you pay more for much less. However, you still get a more than decent LED HDTV, which obeys your every command at the click of a button (do not expect it to flip over though!). Like most other suppliers of this generation, the basics are what you get, without burning the house down, so, in that context, LG have offered you the LG 55LS4500.
